The cathode is generally connected to the positive side of the power supply while the anode is connected to the negative side. When a positive voltage is applied to the capacitor, electrons flow towards the cathode causing it to become positively charged. At the same time, anions in the solution move towards the negatively charged anode. This flow of charge in the electrolyte creates an electric field across the capacitor dielectric, which enables the capacitor to store energy.
