Aluminum Electrolytic CapacitorsAluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are a type of polarized capacitor which stores electrical energy in the electric field created by the separation of positive and negative electrical potentials in the form of aluminum oxide layers. AECs are the most commercially available capacitors and are widely used in electronics, including circuit boards and power supplies.The EKY-500ELL122MM25S is an AEC manufactured by Nippon Chemicon. It is designed for use as a high-voltage (5kV to 500V) filter capacitor in general-purpose power stabilization and filtering applications. The EKY-500ELL122MM25S features a dielectric of aluminium oxide with double-sided surface-mount technology, 105°C operational temperature, and a capacitance range of 100µF to 200kµF. It is a high-end, high-reliability product with 6,000 hours of endurance testing.AECs are constructed with two metal electrolyte plates, an anode and a cathode, with alternating layers of aluminum oxide and aluminum separators between them. An anode and its corresponding cathode are typically connected in series, in an alternating principal, to provide the highest capacitance and voltage rating. The EKY-500ELL122MM25S is constructed with two aluminum-etched plates, which are directly etched to reduce physical size and improve mechanical robustness, and alternating layers of aluminum oxide sandwiched between them. This type of construction yields better capacitance stability at high temperatures, improved noise filtering, and improved ESR.It has an operating voltage of 500V and a breakdown voltage of 10.7 V/ 5kHz (typical). The EKY-500ELL122MM25S can handle peak currents up to 10A and is rated for ripple current up to 7A. It can operate at temperatures of -45°C to 105°C and it has a moisture resistance of up to 0.0005.To ensure reliable operation, the Anode and Cathode of the EKY-500ELL122MM25S are provided with Safety Doors, which provides sufficient contact area to improve electric field utilization and increases reliability against short circuits. The anode is also shielded with a stainless steel shield to ensure minimal voltage leakage.To optimize the performance of the EKY-500ELL122MM25S, M-Traps are provided for effective noise filtration and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) current limiters are used in combination with an ESR resistor for current limiting. This combination provides the best protection against high voltage and high current transients, as well as the best ESR performance.Overall, the EKY-500ELL122MM25S is a high quality, reliable AEC that can be used in many different applications. It is highly suitable for use as a high-voltage filter capacitor and can perform well in general power stabilization and filtering applications.
