The EL3061 from Electrocraft is an optically isolated power switch for circuits in which it can be necessary to electrically isolate the load from the control circuit. This is an application in which the EL3061 can be used when it is necessary to turn a load on and off, or to start or stop the power flow, without a direct electrical connection between the switch and the load. The EL3061 is an optically isolated triac interface which uses a combination of a light emitting diode (LED) and a photo Darlington pair to provide electrical isolation between input signal and output switch. This optoisolator switch is well suited for many applications in industrial control and interface circuits.

The EL3061 offers fast switching times and good noise immunity due to its dual-channel construction. It has an optically-coupled LED connected in series with a photo Darlington pair, which is connected to a triac thyristor. The control signal is applied to the LED, which converts it to light energy that is then optically transferred across the isolated gap to the semiconductor. When the LED is activated it causes a current to flow in the photo Darlington pair, which in turn triggers the triac gate and turns on the output triac.

The EL3061 is designed to work in both AC and DC circuits. In AC circuit applications, the EL3061 can provide full AC load current switching control from zero to full line voltage. It features a very fast switching action and delivers high reliability with power cycling capabilities up to 400 cycles per second. This optoisolator is also designed to provide full current switching across the full range of operating voltages, including those at the lower portion of the voltage range. In DC circuits, the EL3061 features an adjustable delay time which ranges from 0-30 ms, enabling it to provide accurate DC output to a load with high input current demands.

The EL3061 is constructed with a photo-optoisolator that consists of a photo Darlington transistor and an optically coupled LED. This optoisolator allows the system to operate reliably in a variety of conditions, including in noisy environments. The LED and photo Darlington provide electrical isolation that prevents ground loop problems and ensure long-term performance. The optoisolator utilizes a light source and photo transistor to create an electrical connection between two isolated circuits without creating a direct electrical connection. The optoisolator is connected to the circuitry on either side, and the LED transmits a signal from the input side to the photo transistor on the output side. The photo transistor then triggers the triac gate and turns on the triac.

The EL3061 is suitable for use with a wide range of applications. It can be used for on/off switches, dimmers, motor speed controls, motor starters, lighting control systems, and many other industrial control applications. In addition, the EL3061 is ideal for interface circuits, providing electrical isolation between a relatively low voltage control signal and a relatively high voltage switching circuit. The EL3061 can provide superior electrical isolation and noise immunity, as well as fast switching action, while consuming minimal amounts of power and operating at high temperatures.
