1. Application field

1. Working principle

In ELXM221VSN221MP25S aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the anode is made of aluminum foil with a thin film of oxide formed on its surface. The cathode is made up of liquid or solid electrolyte which serves as an ion bridge between the positive and negative poles. The capacitance value depends on the thickness of the oxide layer and the size of the anode and the cathode. The aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be polarized or non-polarized. In polarized type, the positive and negative terminals are connected to the anode and cathode respectively. When an electric voltage is applied, charges of opposite polarity are attracted to each other across the anode oxide layer and the electrolyte, thus producing the capacitance effect.

In non-polarized type capacitors, the anode and cathode wires are reversed, and no electric voltage is applied. In this case, the electrolyte acts as a bridge between two conductors, allowing charges of opposite polarity to pass between them, thus producing the capacitance effect.

In addition to capacitance, aluminum electrolytic capacitors have been found to provide excellent low impedance characteristics, high temperature resistance, and high ripple current capacity.
