Working Principle

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor is constructed of an anode made from aluminum foil and a cathode made of a saturated material such as aluminum oxide or tantalum pentoxide. These are separated by a porous material known as an electrolyte. The aluminum foil acts as the anode electrode and the other material acts as the cathode. An electric current is applied to the capacitor which causes an electrochemical reaction. This forms a very thin layer of dielectric material between the anode and cathode layers. This thin layer of dielectric is known as the capacitance.

The capacitance of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined by the area of the aluminum foil, the thickness of the electrolyte material, and the type of dielectric material used.
