EMI/RFI Filters (LC, RC Networks) applications and working principles have been employed in many industries for decades. The purpose of these electronic components is to mitigate or reduce the level of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), which can interfere with other electronic devices or components. In this article, we will focus on EMIF02-USB05C2, which is a specialized EMI/RFI filter developed by the TE Connectivity Corporation, and discuss its application fields and working principle.The EMIF02-USB05C2 is a 3-stage filter which consists of a Low Pass LC filter, High Pass LC filter, and an RC trap filter which are designed to reduce conducted EMI and interferences in USB applications. The RC trap filter provides additional filtering of Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from the USB lines.The LowPass LC filter is designed to reduce conducted EMI in the frequency range from 10 MHz to 400 MHz. It consists of an inductor and capacitor connected in series between the differential pins. The inductor and capacitor are frequency selective and act as a band stop filter at frequencies higher than the resonant frequency of the filter, thus providing a lower impedance to ground. This reduces the amount of EMI that can be conducted to the device.The HighPass LC filter is designed to reduce EMI in the frequency range from 10 MHz to 1GHz. As with the LowPass LC filter, it consists of an inductor and a capacitor connected in series between the differential pins. It acts as a bandpass filter, allowing high frequency signals to pass through while attenuating signals with frequencies below the resonant frequency. This improves the signal quality by reducing the amount of EMI conducted to the device.The RC trap filter is a low pass filter with an edge at approximately 800 MHz. It is used in USB lines to reduce the amount of RFI above 800 MHz by providing more filtering in that range. This improves the signal quality and reduces the amount of EMI conducted to the device.In summary, the EMIF02-USB05C2 was developed to reduce conducted EMI and interferences in USB applications.
