Introduction to EMI/RFI Filters (LC, RC Networks)
EMI/RFI filters are designed to reduce noise from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) from electrical and electronic components. EMI/RFI filters can be found in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities, as well as in the military and aerospace industry.The most common type of EMI/RFI filter is the Low Pass (LP) or High Pass (HP) filter. These filters attenuate all frequencies above or below a certain frequency, respectively. Low and High pass filters can be implemented as simple RC or LC networks. An LC filter is comprised of one or more inductors and one or more capacitors. The inductance and capacitance elements form a resonant circuit, which produces a frequency-dependent impedence, such that at the resonant frequency, the impedence of the circuit is infinite. Above or below the resonant frequency, the impedence decreases with frequency, resulting in filtered noise. RC filters are comprised of two main components: resistors and capacitors. Rather than producing a resonant circuit, RC filters use resistive-capacitive (RC) networks to attenuate high-frequency noise. RC networks rely on the capacitance element to block high frequency noise and allow low-frequency noise to pass.EMIF05-AUD02F3 Application Field and Working Principle
The EMIF05-AUD02F3 is an EMI/RFI filter designed for audio applications. It uses an LC filter network to reduce and filter out unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). The EMIF05-AUD02F3 is designed to have a pass-band from 300 Hz to 2.2 kHz with an insertion loss of less than 0.5 dB. It has an insertion loss of less than 0.1 dB from 1 kHz to 20 kHz, and a rise-time of 1 ms. It has a common mode conductivity of 45dB at 500 kHz and greater. The filter can handle up to 5A of current and withstand a maximum voltage of 24V. The working principle of the EMIF05-AUD02F3 is based on the use of a three-pole LC filter network. The LC filter network consists of two capacitors and two inductors, with the capacitors connected to the negative and positive terminals of the audio output. The inductors are connected between the audio output and ground. This combination produces a dip in the frequency response at the dip frequency of the inductors and capacitors, which filters out the unwanted EMI and RFI signals. The EMIF05-AUD02F3 is designed to be a cost-effective, low-noise solution for audio applications.
