Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or sometimes simply referred to as electrolytic capacitors, are a type of electrochemical capacitor that consists of two aluminum foil electrodes separated by a liquid or solid electrolyte made of anionic substance like aluminum oxide. The aluminum electrodes are usually tarnished to increase their surface area and improve their electrical conductivity. The most common form of aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a cylindrical can style capacitor. Depending on the size, there are several forms of electrolytic capacitor available, such as: ESMQ101ELL470MHB5D, which issmall in size with a capacitance range of 0.1 to 470 µF.

Application Field

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of power supply components with a variety of uses. Working Principle

The basic principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is that it stores electrical energy as a result of a buildup of electric charge on the aluminum foil electrodes. The electric charge is actually created through an electrochemical process in which the anions in the electrolyte react with the aluminum electrodes creating an electric field. This electric field between the two electrodes then stores the charge that is eventually released when the capacitor is discharged.

The electrochemical process of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a result of the two aluminum electrodes being in contact with the electrolyte. The electrolyte serves to not only store electrical energy but also functions as an electrical insulator and as a conduit for electrons. The electrolyte helps to conduct electrical current in between the electrodes and is responsible for the transfer of electrons from one electrode to the other.

In order for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor to function, it must have a properly designed and functioning cathode. The cathode is the active surface of the capacitor which releases the electric charge stored in the capacitor when it is discharged. The cathode is usually made up of an anode and a cathode layer which is separated by a dielectric material. This dielectric material is typically a liquid or solid insulating material that helps to prevent the direct current flow between the two electrodes.

The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is fairly simple and they are used in a variety of applications in electrical engineering and other industries. As mentioned above, they are widely used in power supplies, pulse circuits, and motor start circuits due to the high load current they can provide.
