The FAN4147SX is a highly integrated pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller, designed for off-line switching-mode power-supply (SMPS) applications. This device integrates several control, protection, and diagnostic functions for protection of the Power Semiconductor Device (PSD) and DC-DC converters. Application Fields
The FAN4147SX is primarily used in off-line converter applications mainly for consumer, industrial, and automotive purposes. It provides an integrating control and diagnostic solution for high-power DC-DC conversion. This device is capable of two-transistor forward, two-transistor forward with valley switch, and two-transistor flyback topologies, which makes it ideal for a variety of applications that require high-power output, such as personal computers, ultra books and tablets, servers, DIMMs, LCD TVs, datacom and telecom equipment, automotive interior and exterior lighting, instrument clusters, and so on.
Working Principle
The FAN4147SX integrates several features and functions that are required in an off-line DC-DC converter. First, the device contains a high-bandwidth current-mode PWM controller and input voltage supervisor with programmable under-voltage lockout (UVLO) threshold, over-temperature protection with hysteresis, and output voltage supervisor with programmable soft-start time. Second, it integrates over-current protection and over-temperature protection that can be configured to provide over-current protection in either current-mode or voltage-mode operation. Third, it also provides four-level low-frequency spread spectrum compliant to EN55022 class A, which can reduce Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) without the need for an additional spread-spectrum device. Finally, the device also contains a low-resistive current path on the connector side to reduce power dissipation.
The FAN4147SX PWM controller has an operating frequency up to 500kHz, depending on the load and current sense resistor value. It has a fixed frequency operation between 20kHz to 100kHz and can be programmed with an external frequency set resistor. The PWM controller circuits internal soft start will auto-start the power supply when the power is on and it will turn off the power when the power is off. The device can also reduce input current when the current sense feedback decreases, which can improve power supply efficiency. The over-temperature protection can be set to shut down the system when the temperature is too high, thus protecting the system from being damaged by excessive temperature.
In addition, the FAN4147SX also contains a 200mA adjustable output voltage supervisor. This feature provides a reference voltage for the output voltage PWM comparator, thus ensuring output accuracy.
