Below is an overview of its application field and working principle.
Application Field
The FAN5701UMP08X is a high performance LED driver IC for portable lighting, desk lighting, desktop monitors, street lamps, retail display and automotive applications, such as LED backlight, cabinet lighting and LED accent lighting.
This device offers a unique combination of features and flexibility. It implements IEEE 802.3af compliant dynamic power management which can reduce significantly the power consumption during light-load operation and prolong the working time. Plus, the digital PWM dimming can reduce the power consumption during maximum light intensity demand.
The device can also generate PWM output signals with flexible duty cycle and frequency. This allows the designer to keep a low frequency range while having excellent dynamic performance, thus reducing the noise in adjacent stages or parts.
Finally, FAN5701UMP08X has highly precise over temperature protection and over-current protection to prevent potential damage from external environment and ensure reliability of the product.
Working Principle
The FAN5701UMP08X is a high precision, low noise and low cost LED driver. It is designed to drive 1A output current with adjustable peak current and frequency range. This IC has an optimized state machine which controls the peak current, the frequency and the duty-cycle of the output current pulse.
In terms of protection features, the device offers over temperature protection, overload protection and short circuit protection. Furthermore, there is also open loop protection which can detect any inconsistency between the expected feedback voltage of the LED driver and the actual feedback voltage and shut down the device, thus protecting the product and the system.
In order to ensure the accuracy of the dimming range, the FAN5701UMP08X uses a precise voltage comparison circuit and a current sensing circuit. The voltage comparison circuit provides a voltage reference for the current sensing circuit to detect and generate the feedback signals, based on which the output pulse can be adjusted accordingly.
The FAN5701UMP08X has an integrated DC-DC converter for boosting input voltage to the desired output voltage. This converter provides power supply stability and improved efficiency. The output current is regulated by two paths, a voltage-mode control circuit and an unregulated current loop. The voltage-mode control circuit is used to generate short active time while the unregulated current loop is used to prevent the output current from exceeding the set value.
Finally, the FAN5701UMP08X utilizes selectable output frequency and adjustable PWM dimming to achieve optimized system performance. In addition to the common PWM signals, the device also provides the option of serial control interface to enable user control of the device.
