Power factor correction (PFC) refers to a range of techniques and technologies that are used to improve the quality of power supplied to an electrical load. The FAN7528N device is a high-performance integrated PFC controller for medium size applications. It provides superior performance with a low system cost.

To begin, the valley switching control circuit senses the input voltage and triggers the main high-side MOSFET and timer to switch in a pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode. During the PWM mode, the PFC inductor current is sensed by the drain voltage of the main high-side MOSFET. When the input voltage drops below the set threshold, the valley switching control circuit and timer will reset, initiating the flyback PWM pattern. The flyback pattern is then maintained until the input voltage returns to its normal operating level.
The integrated buck boost regulator is responsible for automatically detecting and regulating both continuous line input voltage and no-load current levels independently. The regulator continuously senses the no-load current levels and determines whether to increase the input voltage or decrease it. This is done by comparing the current sensed values to the programmed no-load current value.
The synchronous rectifier control analog circuit is designed to reduce the power loss when the PFC rectifier is operated in discontinuous mode. It is responsible for automatically detecting and controlling both the turn-on and turn-off thresholds of the synchronous rectifier. This circuit reduces the power losses associated with the PFC rectifier.
Finally, the fault detection comparator is designed to detect the over voltage and over current conditions. It is responsible for triggering a fault signal to the main high side MOSFET driver in the case of a fault. This will shut down the PFC operation and prevent any further damage.
