The FOD4118T is a unique optoisolator designed specifically to drive a triac, SCR output. The device is used as a power interface between an electrical control system and a load, providing electrical isolation and driving power control components such as AC switches, discrete hobs, dimmers, small motors, relays, and other related devices.
The FOD4118T optoisolator consists of a gallium arsenide infrared LED optically coupled to a photo SCR. When current is passed through the LED a signal is sent to the photo SCR, triggering its conduction and firing the triac, SCR output. The optoisolator isolates the input and output making a power interface in electrical environments with high common mode voltage noise or high static potential differences.
The FOD4118T has a switching speed of 10 µs, a supply voltage range of 2–15.5 V, and a 3–5 V current transfer ratio of 800% (LED on). It has high immunity to noise, high-voltage transient spikes, and fast current transients. The input and output can be AC or DC, and the device has excellent temperature stability. The FOD4118T also has a choice of correct power dissipation, emitter current, and LED control current.
The working principle of the FOD4118T is based on the emission of photons from the LED, which is then detected by the SCR. When current passes through the LED, the number of photons released increases. This enables the optoisolator to generate a higher level of signals to the photo SCR and thus it triggers its conduction and fires the triac, SCR output. The FOD4118T typically uses between 4 and 10 mA of current and usually requires up to 15.5 V of power source.
