Optoisolators, specifically logic output optoisolators, are designed to protect and protect circuits from electrical noise. The logic output optoisolator is used in the isolation of digital signals for industrial and in scientific and medical devices. The FOD8160R2V, by Fairchild, is one of the most commonly used optoisolators to provide this type of isolation.

The FOD8160R2V is a slotted type, 1000V optical-coupler with a built-in Schmitt trigger and a data sinking output. It is a 3.3V logic gate output, with a 4-pin DIP configuration and a low-voltage gain. The device has a pair of output collectors with a minimum 1.0mA drive current, a high-voltage isolation of 10,000 Vrms and a minimum of 1,000Vrms, with a maximum surge of 4,000Vrms.

TheSchmitt trigger input circuitry ensures that the optical-coupler is resistant to voltage spikes and counter-electromotive force, as well as to slow input signals. This results in less data loss when used in noise-sensitive applications. With its 4-pin DIP configuration and low voltage gain, the FOD8160R2V is easy to incorporate into many existing designs.
