The general category of Isolators – Gate Drivers comprises a wide variety of products used to enable the flow of electrical current between two points. The specific product of focus in this article is the FOD8332 Gate Driver from Freescale Semiconductor. This driver is an optically isolated, Symmetrical-Output Gate Driver which is intended for use with Power MOSFETs. The FOD8332 is a package consisting of three components: two FOD8332 Gate-Driver ICs and one FOD8506 isolation IC. The FOD8332 MOSFET driver converts a logic-level signal (e.g. from a PLC) to a high-current output signal suitable for MOSFETs. The driver is optimized for controlling N-channel MOSFETs with both symmetrical turn-on/turn-off as well as asymmetrical turn-on/turn-off. The FOD8332 driver provides a high-voltage transistor drive that is capable of driving gate voltages up to the maximum rated voltage of the MOSFET (VGS).

The FOD8332 features over-current protection capability which is able to protect both the MOSFET as well as the driver itself. It is designed with sophisticated protection circuitry which is able to detect short-circuits without the addition of external current sensing resistors. Short-circuit detection is provided for both static and dynamic conditions, with the ability to dynamically detect short-circuits within 2 μs.

The driver is designed to provide a high-speed switching rate with high noise immunity and low EMI. The FOD8332 includes a pull-up resistor as well as a clamping structure which is able to reduce the maximum peak current limit and provide soft-start. In addition, the FOD8332 has built-in protection features such as over-voltage, foldback and over-temperature shutdown.

The FOD8332 is designed to work with MOSFETs that have voltage ratings of up to -7.5V to +50V. The driver is able to control up to four N-channel MOSFETs and provides up to 10A of current. It is available in a compact TSSOP-14 package, drawing as little as 3.5mA of current.

Overall, the FOD8332 driver provides an efficient method of controlling high-power MOSFETs for a wide range of applications. The built-in protection features provide excellent protection against short circuits and over current conditions, while the built-in clamping structure helps reduce EMI noise and speeds up the turn-off time. This makes it an ideal candidate for applications where high-power output switching is required.
