Isolators - Gate Drivers

The FOD8332V is an isolation gate driver created by Founder Optoelectronics used to provide isolation between a microcontroller (MCU) and power devices such as IGBTs. It provides galvanic insulation for gate signals with transient suppression capabilities.

Application Field

The FOD8332V is primarily used in applications, including motor drives, inverters, and other medium to high power appliances which are developed for both consumer and professional use. It is used for isolated gate driving applications, including isolation of the MCU from the power module.

Working Principle

FOD8332V utilizes optocouplers to isolate the gate signals from the MCU and power module. The optocoupler consists of two parts, the transmitter and the receiver. On the transmitting side, the MCU sends a signal to the optocoupler which triggers an LED through a base resistor. When the signal is received at the receptor side, the LED illuminates a photodiode, forming a complete circuit. The signal is then converted to a high voltage gate drive signal and passed on to the power device (IGBT, MOSFET etc.)

In addition, the isolation gate driver includes surge protection capability which protects the MCU or system from overvoltage or overcurrent issues when switching IGBTs. It also provides ESD protection for the gate signal, protecting the MCU and system from high voltage transients.

FOD8332V’s combination of isolation and surge protection capabilities allows for high performance and reliable operation in challenging medium- to high-power applications.
