When an AC voltage is applied to the input terminals of the bridge the diodes alternate conducting in a characteristic \'ripple\' pattern. This produces a DC voltage output which has a lower voltage than the input. It also contains some AC ripple due to the alternating current conducting in the bridge circuit.
This bridge rectifier works by allowing current to flow through the two output terminals, in one direction only, when an AC voltage is applied to the input terminals. The four diodes are connected in such a way that they alternate conducting. When a positive AC voltage is applied to the input, diode DP1 and DP2 conduct, resulting in the current to flow through the load in one direction. When a negative AC voltage is applied, then DP3 and DP4 conduct, again resulting in current to flow through the load in one direction only.
This alternating of conducting of the diodes results in a \'ripple\' pattern on the DC output, as the current is directed in one direction for a certain period of time and then in another direction for a period of time. This ripple pattern is what gives a bridge rectifier it\'s unidirectional behaviour.
