The GKN71/16 is a single-phase, full-wave, silicon bridge rectifier. It can be used for low-power AC-to-DC conversion and voltage conversion applications. Moreover, it can be used as a safety element when high-voltage/current conditions exist in an AC power circuit. This two-part rectifier is divided into two plates, a negative and a positive. Each plate consists of 8 transistors, the top row being n-type and the bottom row being p-type, connected in a back-to-back voltage configuration.
The forward voltage drop of a GKN71/16 diode is 125 mV, while the reverse recovery time is 500 ns. This makes the diode suitable for low-power operations, including power supply design and power factor correction. However, due to its relatively low reverse voltage, it is not suitable for high-power applications. The GKN71/16 can be used in applications such as switch-mode power supplies with operating frequencies up to 1 MHz and brake chopper circuits with switching frequencies up to 2 MHz.
For an AC input, the GKN71/16 operates as a full-wave rectifier, with each of the eight transistors conducting in alternate positive and negative half-cycles of the input voltage. This provides a rectified voltage output of twice the peak voltage of the input. When the AC input is connected in series with a 90 degree-angle capacitor, the device becomes a smoothing circuit, producing a more uniform output voltage.
When the GKN71/16 is connected in series with a semiconductor switch, as in an SCR power supply, the device acts as a protection element. When used in AC to DC conversion circuits, the GKN71/16 can react to voltage changes in the power line and shunt the current flow away from the sensitive load. This is particularly useful for protecting circuits from over-current and over-voltage conditions.
