TVS - Diodes: GL12T-E3-18 Application Field and Working Principle
TVS - Diodes are an important component in preventing electromagnetic interference (EMI). Examples include common EMI suppressors such as transorb transient voltage suppressors. A TVS diode is a semiconductor device used to protect components from potentially damaging voltage spikes. Working similarly to a Zener diode, the TVS is designed to suppress the increase of voltage to prevent damage to other components.The GL12T-E3-18 is a TVS diode manufactured by Littelfuse. It is designed to protect various automotive and industrial applications from electrical overstress or Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). The GL12T-E3-18 is a silicon unidirectional diode, with an ESD rating of 15 kV per ISO10605. It has a rated working voltage of 12V, and a peak pulse current rating of 3A.The TVS diode works by clamping the voltage to the breakdown voltage of the device. The voltage rating of the device limits the amount of current that can flow through the diode. The current flow depends on the applied voltage, which is why the GL12T-E3-18 has a rated working voltage of 12V. When a standard voltage of 12V is applied, the current will flow at a specified level. If the applied voltage exceeds 12V, the current flow will be limited and the voltage across the diode will start to rise. At the breakdown voltage (typically 12.6V for the GL12T-E3-18), the current flow will start to increase exponentially, and will eventually reach the peak pulse rating of 3A. This process limits the amount of voltage across the device, preventing the other components from being damaged due to a voltage spike.In automotive applications, the GL12T-E3-18 is commonly used to protect components from ESD and from over-voltage events.
