TVS - Diodes

Transient voltage suppressor diodes, commonly referred to as TVS - diodes, are devices used for protection against transient overvoltage events such as those caused by electrostatic discharge or lightning strikes. TVS Diodes can offer maximum protection against electrical damage caused by transient voltage pulses or surges. They provide superior protection against transients due to their extremely fast response.

GSOT03C-G3-08 Application Field and Working Principle

GSOT03C-G3-08 is an ultra-low capacitance, low clamping voltage (VClamp) TVS diode designed for ESD and transient surge protection. It is available in a small-sized leadless SOT-23 package which is ideal for use in high density and miniaturized components like cellular phones, PDA’s, portable media players, and peripheral devices. The diode has a low On-state resistance (ROn), which ensures low leakage current. This diode has a bidirectional ESD protection capability and can protect an electrical device from both positive and negative transients.

The working principle of a TVS diode is fairly simple. During normal operation the diode behaves like a regular diode and allows current to flow in only one direction. However, when an overvoltage transient occurs, the diode begins to conduct current in both directions. This is known as a “clamping” voltage and it limits the current flow to protect the device it is protecting. The TVS diode also has a Heating Effect, which is caused by the excess current that is conducted when the diode conducts, which helps dissipate the energy stored in the transient.
