The GTCA28-402M-R03 is a GDT designed for applications requiring the combination of high-power handling, high-reliability, and high surge capability. The device consists of two main components: a ceramic housing that contains a gas or vacuum and a metallic conductor. The metallic conductor has a central terminal that is insulated from the housing. When a potential is applied to the device, the gas in the ceramic housing ionizes and forms a conductive path between the central terminal and the housing, allowing current to flow. When a surge or transient is applied to the GTCA28-402M-R03, the device immediately begins to break down. This breakdown process occurs in two stages: an ionization stage and an absorption stage. During the ionization stage, a high voltage is applied to the device. As the voltage increases, electrons begin to rapidly collide with the gas molecules in the device, producing a chain reaction of ionization. This process continues until the voltage overcomes the ionization potential of the gas. Once the voltage reaches the ionization potential, an electric arc is created, allowing current to flow from the central terminal to the housing. This current is then absorbed into the protective ground system, thus preventing further damage to the equipment.
