Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are power devices that are designed to protect electrical equipment from the potentially damaging effects of lightning surges and other transient overvoltages. The GTCA28-801L-P05 Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) is a multi-stage, unidirectional, self-recovery type arrester used in telecommunication line applications.

The design of this GDT is based on a series of stacked metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) and multiple electrostatic capacitors. It utilizes a series of metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) which are composed of high resistivity semiconductor material and have a typical non-linear response to voltage. The non-linear characteristic is essential in controlling excessive voltage.

The electrostatic capacitors are used to create what is essentially a high-pass filter, which can suppress lower frequency events while allowing high frequency signal to pass through. The capacitors act to filter out non-critical high frequency signals, while at the same time allowing through vital, low frequency signals. This allows for a more reliable and robust arrester design.

The GTCA28-801L-P05 GDT is designed to protect telecommunications lines from lightning surges or induced overvoltages, as well as from ESD (electrostatic discharge) or EFT (electrical fast transients). In addition to that, it can also provide an additional level of protection against EMI (electromagnetic interference). By utilizing the non-linear response and high-pass filter capabilities of the arrester, it can effectively suppress any high- or low-frequency transients, while allowing through vital, low frequency signals.

The GTCA28-801L-P05 GDT is typically installed downstream of a protector such as a polyswitch or fuse, with the purpose of reducing the residual voltage on the protected equipment. The arrester is rated for an operating voltage of 6V, and can handle impulses up to 8kV (in both positive and negative polarities).

This makes the GTCA28-801L-P05 GDT an ideal solution for protecting a variety of telecommunications systems from lightning induced surges, EMI, and other transient overvoltages. Furthermore, its high-pass filter and non-linear characteristic make it an excellent choice for suppressing high frequency EMI, as well as for providing additional protection against other high-voltage transients.
