Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are used for the protection of electrical and electronic equipment from damage caused by overvoltage transients created by lightning strikes. GDTs (also known as Gas Plasma Arrestors) are typically mounted on the outside of the equipment, and when they detect an overvoltage, their high current conductivity rapidly discharges the transient voltage, thereby protecting the equipment.

The GTCR38-261M-R10-FS2 is a GDT designed to protect low, medium and high speed digital equipment from high-frequency transient overvoltages. This GDT is available in a variety of configurations, dependant on the environmental conditions and the type of device it is protecting. The GTCR38-261M-R10-FS2 features an over-voltage protection voltage of 500V, a response time of less than 10nS, and a peak let-through current of less than 10A.

The working principle of a GDT is the same for any type of GDT, no matter the configuration. In order to protect equipment from overvoltage, the GDT needs to detect a voltage surge and then conduct the current away from the equipment, thus protecting it. This is done through the use of a gas discharge tube. When the voltage rises, the gas inside the tube ionizes, creating an electrical current, which is then conductive and quickly discharges the transient voltage. This process happens in a matter of nanoseconds.
