Optoisolators are an often-overlooked component in a variety of applications. The H11C2S optoisolator is an example of the type sometimes referred to as “triac and SCR output” optoisolators. As the name implies, H11C2S units employ sensitive AC-rated triac and silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) output stages that provide safety isolation and bidirectional nature of the controlled power circuit.

As a means of protection, H11C2S optoisolators provide electrical isolation in between components of the circuit, allowing power from one to be passed without electrical contact between them. With their triac or SCR outputs, H11C2S optoisolators are specifically designed for triggering boards which are traditionally used to control AC power applications with maximum voltage ratings of 600 VAC and currents up to 4A.

These optoisolators provide complete electrical isolation of the controlled power circuit from the controlling signal circuit as well as fail-safe protection of both circuits from potential electrical failure. In addition, H11C2S optoisolator units have a very fast switching time – less than 10μs, which helps to ensure the efficiency of the power transmission within the circuit.

The internal equivalent circuit of a H11C2S optoisolator consists of an LED feeding current into an optocoupler, which is then connected to a bidirectional interface for the power, such as a triac or SCR. When a current flows through the optoisolator, the LED will emit light which is detected by the phototransistor. This detection generates a current which is used to turn on the SCR or triac of the power circuit.

The multilayer construction of a H11C2S device and its internals make it a safe and reliable means of power control, allowing devices that interact with potentially dangerous voltages to remain isolated. In addition, the safe construction and triple isolation layers contained within the optoisolator make it an ideal solution for automotive applications and other similarly sensitive circuits.

The H11C2S optoisolator is also relatively easy to use thanks to the simple connection schema it employs. As a result, setup time and wiring can be minimized. The LED has three connection points – input, output, and ground, while the power terminal utilizes the same pinout arrangement as the triac or SCR, meaning it can act as a drop-in replacement. The input terminals will need to be supplied with a signal in order for the contol circuit to operate, typically coming from a microcontroller, thus allowing the power circuit to be triggered with the desired waveform pattern.

Overall, the H11C2S optoisolator is an attractive choice for triggering AC power applications. With simple wiring configuration, fast switching speeds, and complete electrical isolation, it provides a reliable and safe solution for power control.
