Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are an important device for data transmission, providing electrical isolation between two circuits. Specifically, Logic Output Optoisolators are used to transfer logic-level signals between circuits without relying on a direct electrical connection, using a LED and optically responsive device to form an isolation barrier between the circuits. One of these devices is the H11L1-V, a 2-pin device with a logic output.

The H11L1-V package includes a trigating logic output transistor, a photodiode, and a high-brightness LED with a visible red light, all housed in a “piggyback” package with a standard 6-pin DIP socket. The LED is triggered with a TTL-compatible input signal, causing a current to flow through the diode, and generating a voltage across the transistor, which is converted to a logic output signal.

The optically isolating circuit of the H11L1-V has an isolation capacity of 5000Vrms between the input and the output for one minute. This allows it to be used in applications where high voltage spikes or EMI could cause interference, such as controlling power distribution networks, motor control, and lightning protection. It also works well in harsher environments, such as industrial automation or medical equipment. The device has a response speed of up to 50MHz and a minimum logic threshold voltage of 0.9V.

The H11L1-V is also an excellent choice for high-temperature applications due to its capability to work in an extended temperature range of -40°C to +135°C. The device’s LED is rated to operate up to a continuous current rating of 25mA and a maximum peak current of 100mA. Being known for its “green” credentials, the H11L1-V is mercury-, silicone-, and halogen-free, making it suitable for RoHS-compliant applications.
