Optoisolators are electronic components used to transfer electrical signals between two isolated circuits. A convenient type of optoisolator is the logic-output type, such as the H11L3 device. The H11L3 mechanism consists of a light-emitting diode (LED) and a photosensor circuit, such as a photodiode or a phototransistor. By measuring the current in the LED, the state of the photosensor output can be determined.

The H11L3 is an optoisolator well-suited for applications that require high speed and an extended operating temperature range or those that require both input and output isolation. Typical applications of H11L3 optoisolators are found in power supplies, computer peripheral and communications devices, and industrial control and instrumentations. These optoisolators are generally used for voltage protection, digital logic isolation, and signal transmission over a long distance.

The working principle of the H11L3 optoisolator is based upon the transfer of data signals across an optical barrier. It contains a gallium arsenide infrared LED on one side and a phototransistor on the other side. The signals are transferred across the optical barrier when the LED is driven by a voltage. As the LED emits light, the phototransistor absorbs the light and generates a proportional output signal, allowing data signals to be transmitted without direct electrical connection.

The major performance advantage of the H11L3 optoisolator over other logic optoisolators is its high speed. It has a typical delay time of less than 8 ns, making it suitable for high speed applications such as video and communication systems. In addition, the H11L3 offers a wide operating temperature range of -55 to +85°C. The device also provides excellent isolation protection against transient noise and overvoltage surges. Furthermore, the H11L3 is also capable of providing both input and output isolation, allowing signals to be transmitted across an isolation barrier without any direct electrical connection.
