Radio Frequency (RF) circuits are employed to handle a wide variety of tasks—from transmitting and receiving signals for global communication, to powering household appliances. One popular example of this technology is the HMC917LP3E IC, found in a growing number of different applications.An ideal IC for any top-tier RF circuit needs to be highly efficient, with excellent sensitivity to a wide range of frequencies. The HMC917LP3E IC is just such an IC, and as such, it has fast found application in a variety of different situations. It is a highly versatile Non-Reflective IIP3 Wideband IC.The HMC917LP3E is a Double-Balanced Mixer, which means that, when in use, it transmits signals to and from the two active ports of the chipsets at the same time. The chip can act as a mixer, meaning it can combine two different RF signals to transmit one combined signal, or it can act as a demodulator to separate the signals again.The device is designed with an IIP3 performance level already integrated, which is a characteristic parameter of mixers. It has a 28 dB average for IIP3 with a minimum of 25 dB when working at different frequencies. This is achieved thanks to the use of an Inductor-Capacitor-Resistor (LCR) filter.The chip also includes a slew rate limiter for increased protection of the device’s circuitry and performance. The slew rate limiter prevents any frequency signals that differentiate too quickly—avoiding excessive current drain that could potentially still damage the device.The IC can be used in several different frequency ranges—from DC (Direct Current) to 5 GHz. This gives excellent versatility to the RF chip and allows it to be used in a variety of different applications. It is widely used for antenna beamforming, wireless communication modules, watches, and Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, as well as many other applications.Another major advantage of the HMC917LP3E IC is its ability to filter out unwanted signals from the frequency range. In addition, the signal transmitted from the chip can be reliably modulated.The HMC917LP3E mixes and demodulates signals in a highly efficient manner that does not reduce signal strength or power.
