HMC976LP3ETR Application Field and Working Principle

The HMC976LP3ETR from the Analog Devices family is a precise, low drift, low noise triple-output voltage regulator. It provides small form factor, low heat dissipation and excellent load and line regulation. It is specifically designed for precision voltage regulation applications in high frequency switching power supplies.

The HMC976LP3ETR is essentially a linear voltage regulator with three separate outputs. It features very low noise outputs, fast transient response time and excellent line and load regulation. It can provide loads up to 3A (total aggregate current) and operate over a wide input voltage range of 4.75V to 18V. The three outputs are selectable between 1.8V, 2.5V and 3.3V. They can be adjusted independently using external trim inputs. Additionally, it includes integrated over temperature, overvoltage, overtemperature and overcurrent protection. Consequently, it is suitable for use in various industrial, consumer, transportation and medical applications.

Working Principle

The HMC976LP3ETR utilizes linear voltage regulation techniques to convert input voltages within a given range to the desired output voltage levels. The regulation is based on the voltage divider network, where the voltage across a series resistor is compared with an internal reference voltage. In case of a negative voltage difference, the error amplifier outputs a control signal that reduces the current output and produces the measured output voltage.At the beginning of the cycle the output voltage is equal to the internal reference voltage. This internal reference voltage is determined by a voltage divider network made of precision resistors. When the load current increases, the output voltage drops by a proportional amount, until it reaches the reference voltage. The error amplifier then senses that the output voltage has dropped, and compensates by increasing the current to the load, until the output voltage equals the reference voltage.

The HMC976LP3ETR also features an integrated circuit (IC) thermal protection circuit. This circuit continuously monitors the internal IC temperature, and if the temperature exceeds the preset threshold, the control loop programming senses an over temperature condition and shuts down the circuitry to avoid any damage due to overheating. Additionally, it features input undervoltage lockout and crowbar protection to prevent any output overvoltage.
