The HMHA2801AR3 optoisolator is a 3.75 kV transistor output optoisolator designed to provide electrical isolation between a low voltage electronics circuit and a high voltage electronics circuit while providing a connection with a transistor output. It is a popular optoisolator choice for providing electrical isolation for automotive applications such as line follower applications, stepper motor controllers, motor protection, fuel pump, and lap time controllers.
The optoisolator contains a photovoltaic cell surrounded by an insulation barrier between two dielectric barriers. Within the optoisolator, the photovoltaic cell provides the input to the optoisolator\'s internal transistor driver for the output of the transistor. When a small amount of light is iradiated to the photovoltaic cell, the cell produces an electrical voltage directly proportional to the intensity of the incoming light. When the light is turned off, the cell stays off. This is useful for sensing the presence or absence of a signal in an electronics circuit.
The optoisolator contains two dual-in-line package components consisting of a phototransistor and a optical lens. The phototransistor and optical lens work together in a diode-tuned circuit to provide electrical isolation as well as the transistor output. The optical lens can be adjusted to focus incoming light to the phototransistor so as to achieve the desired sensitivity.
The optoisolator also contains a voltage-sensing circuit which changes the transistor output depending on the voltage difference between the input and output. This voltage-sensing circuit helps protect the optoisolator\'s components from excessive voltages or high current spikes. Additionally, the optoisolator can be used in circuits utilizing high frequency switching, as the optical blocking between input and output helps prevent interference from the surrounding environment.

Similarly, in line follower applications, the optoisolator is often used to sense the presence of a white line on a black background.
