Thyristors – DIACs, SIDACs
A thyristor is an electronic component used in switchmode power regulation, control, and current-limiting applications in the areas of industrial, consumer and telecom products. Thyristors are mainly used because of the efficient switching characteristics of their structure. There are three types of thyristors: DIACs, SIDACs and TRIACs.
A DIAC (diode rectifier) is a two-terminal switch that controls the flow of current through an electric circuit. It is an asymmetric bi-directional trigger switch that allows current to flow in one direction, but not in the other. DIACs have a low-voltage threshold and are used in low and medium power applications. DIACs are mainly used in switching applications and can be used for switching between AC and DC, for controlling the voltage and for limiting current in DC and AC circuits.
A SIDAC (silicon-controlled rectifier) is a three-terminal switch that is designed to switch on when a voltage at one of its terminals exceeds the specified breakover voltage. Once the trigger voltage is achieved, the SIDAC is turned on, allowing current to flow. SIDACs are more versatile than DIACs and can be used in medium and higher power applications. They are often used as controls in digital electronics and switching devices.
Finally, the TRIAC (triode rectifier) is a three-terminal switch commonly used to control AC circuits. Unlike DIACs and SIDACs, TRIACs are capable of switching AC current in both directions, allowing them to be used to control AC devices such as electric motors, light dimmers and home appliances. TRIACs can also be used for switching between AC and DC, for controlling the voltage and for limiting current in both DC and AC circuits.
The HL5761ARP is a high-voltage low-current power thyristor IC from Sanyo Semiconductor. It consists of three channels of an integrated high-voltage power thyristor, two DIACs and one SIDAC. The device is capable of automatic operation with a supply voltage of 8 VDC and a maximum voltage of 800 VDC. It is capable of controlling AC and DC load currents up to 4 A and is suitable for use in motor controllers, dimmers, AC power supplies and industrial automation equipment.
The HL5761ARP is designed for stand-alone applications in which current regulation or protection is required. It can be used for overcurrent protection, current regulation or as a half-wave rectifier. It can also be used with a voltage regulator to control the voltage of AC power supplies. When used with a voltage regulator or current regulator, the device can provide precise control of the AC supply voltage or the load current.
In addition to its automatic operation, the HL5761ARP can be used for manual control of currents. This can be done via a resistance divider that connects to the switching device, allowing resistive and capacitive loads to be controlled. This makes the device suitable for a wide range of applications, from LED Lighting to Industrial Automation.
Overall, the HL5761ARP is a versatile, high-voltage, low-current power thyristor IC that can be used for a wide range of applications. The integrated DIACs and SIDACs make the device ideal for switching AC and DC currents and offer precise control of both AC supply voltage and load current. The device is also capable of manual control, making it suitable for controlling LED lighting and industrial automation equipment.
