Thyristors, also known as silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) are an important part of the semiconductor family. They are used to control electric power in a variety of applications. Thyristors are also divided into two main categories: bidirectional controlled switches (TRIACs) and unidirectional controlled switches (Thyristors). In this article, we will focus on the unidirectional type – DIACs, SIDACs, and their application field and working principle. First of all, let’s discuss DIACs which stands for “Diode Alternating Current.” DIACs are a type of thyristor and they can control both alternating and direct current. They are designed with a positive gate terminal and two negative terminals, connected between them. The gate terminal is the control terminal, which when enough voltage is applied, it triggers the DIAC. At this moment, the output current passes through the device and can be controlled by varying the voltage. DIACs are used for power control application in home appliances and motor control systems.Another type of thyristor are SIDACs, standing for “Silicon Diode for Alternating Current.” SIDACs are also a type of unidirectional thyristor, although they differ from DIACs in the sense that they are insensitive to temperature and voltage, making them ideal for industrial applications. They feature two gate terminals, a negative terminal and two sensitive zones, giving a higher power rating to the device. SIDACs can be used in numerous ways, ranging from electric power conversion to motor speed control. To sum up, DIACs are thyristors designed to control the current in alternating and direct current, while SIDACs are designed to work flawless on different temperatures and voltages. Both types are used in a variety of applications, ranging from home appliances control to motor speed control.
