First of all, let’s discuss DIACs which stands for “Diode Alternating Current.” DIACs are a type of thyristor and they can control both alternating and direct current. They are designed with a positive gate terminal and two negative terminals, connected between them. The gate terminal is the control terminal, which when enough voltage is applied, it triggers the DIAC. At this moment, the output current passes through the device and can be controlled by varying the voltage. DIACs are used for power control application in home appliances and motor control systems.Another type of thyristor are SIDACs, standing for “Silicon Diode for Alternating Current.” SIDACs are also a type of unidirectional thyristor, although they differ from DIACs in the sense that they are insensitive to temperature and voltage, making them ideal for industrial applications. They feature two gate terminals, a negative terminal and two sensitive zones, giving a higher power rating to the device.
