The ICS601G-01T has been developed as an integrated clock generator with applications primarily in the telecommunication markets. The ICS601G-01T is a frequency synthesizer and phase-locked loop (PLL) built with advanced process and design techniques to provide low phase noise and excellent jitter performance. The device is primarily designed for applications that require the generation of multiple fixed frequencies. With up to twelve fixed output frequencies, the device can generate frequencies ranging from 12 KHz up to 800 MHz.

The ICS601G-01T has three major blocks- a VCO, a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuitry, and a crystal oscillator that provides the reference frequency. The VCO is a self-oscillating circuit that is based on an LC tank. It provides the output clock frequency with a wide range from 12 KHz to 800 MHz. The PLL circuitry synchronizes the VCO with the crystal oscillator and ensures that the output frequencies are in phase with the reference signal. It also filters out noise on the reference signal providing improved jitter performance.

The device supports up to twelve fixed frequencies, and the frequency of each output can be pre-programmed using pins or I2Cinterface. The frequency selection can also be changed at any time through a microprocessor-controlled interface.

The PLL loop includes automatic frequency pulling—a technique used to lock the VCO output frequency to the selected reference frequency as quickly and accurately as possible. This is achieved by minimizing the damping ratio and adjusting the loop gain to increase the loop bandwidth. The increased loop bandwidth provides fast locking times and hence, low phase jitter.

The device also includes advanced PLL techniques such as removing the reference spurs and suppressing the VCO phase noise by optimizing the loop filter. To further reduce reference spurs from input to the VCO, an integrated low-pass filter is included in the design. This filter also contributes to the improved phase noise of the device.

The ICS601G-01T is housed in a 48-pin TQFP package. This device is designed to operate over a wide range of temperatures (–40°C to +85°C). It requires 3.3 V power supply and can work with clock periods up to 400 MHz. The operating frequency range and the features of the device make it suitable for applications in communications, consumer, industrial and other areas.
