The ICS670M-04I is an integrated Micropower Oscillator/Voltage-Controlled Oscillator & Frequency Synthesizer IC. This highly advanced IC employs a triple modulus prescaler and is a cost-effective solution for low-power frequency synthesis applications requiring very small package sizes.
The ICS670M-04I can be used to produce a wide range of clock frequencies from a single, high-frequency crystal reference. By inputting a reference clock frequency, it is able to generate a wide range of output clock frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 160 MHz. The output of the ICS670M-04I is highly programmable and can produce clock frequencies with very low jitter. The output frequency can be programmed either via an I2C bus or through voltage control.
The ICS670M-04I is primarily used in timing and clock generation applications, such as RF transceivers and baseband processors, digital signal processors, ASSPs, voice/data communications, audio equipment and other consumer electronics. Its ability to generate clock frequencies with very low jitter makes it an ideal choice for applications that require precise and stable timing.
The ICS670M-04I’s working principle is fairly simple. It uses a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) to synthesize its output clock frequency from the high-frequency reference clock. The reference input clock is initially divided down by a divide-by-N counter, and this forms the basis of the loop. The feedback of the loop is provided by a phase detector, which compares the divided frequency of the reference clock to a Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO). The phase detector then adjusts the VCO’s output frequency until it matches the reference frequency. This is how the ICS670M-04I is able to generate a wide range of different output frequencies from a single reference source.
The ICS670M-04I also has a wide range of features to ensure that its outputs remain highly stable and programmable. It has an integrated multi-mode filter which provides improved output jitter performance. It also has an integrated reference clock input circuitry which provides an easy way of inputting an external reference frequency. Additionally, the ICS670M-04I also has an on-chip frequency calibration feature which allows the output frequency to be calibrated to very high levels of accuracy.
