The ICS650R-12T family is a series of advanced frequency synthesis devices designed specifically to meet the exacting requirements of today\'s embedded, standard, and high-speed clock generation applications. This family of devices, part of the Intersil\'s advanced frequency synthesis product portfolio, offers a wide range of features, including high performance, enhanced jitter performance, clock output drive capability, and various power saving functions. The ICS650R-12T family of devices are designed to meet a variety of different clock/timing requirements, ranging from a wide/multi-frequency clock range to more closely matched clock outputs and higher resolution fractional-N synthesis designs for optimal jitter and spur performance.

The ICS650R-12T are particularly suited for high-speed signal processing, such as those applications requiring high clock frequencies, low-jitter, and low-spur performance. In addition, these devices also provide excellent power-saving features, such as low-power/high-frequency clock-generation modes, as well as low-power/low-spur and low-power/high-spur modes. This allows designers to select the best implementation for their particular need.

The basic operation of the ICS650R-12T circuit is particular to what is referred to as phase-locked loop (PLL) technology. The frequency is generated by a phase comparison between divided input and divided-output between the PLL’s feedback and reference oscillators. This comparison is performed by a phase detector circuit implemented on the die. The resulting control voltage is used to drive a loop filter that controls the output frequency.

In basic voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) operation, the output frequency is controlled by an applied voltage from the loop filter. The output frequency can be limited to a predetermined range determined by the choice of loop filter parameters and the response of the VCO. The ICS650R-12T family specifically uses a charge-pump based VCO, which can provide fast frequency response to changes in the voltage from the loop filter.

The loop filter and the VCO are two of the most important components in the PLL system. The loop filter is used to limit the maximum and minimum frequencies that can be generated by the PLL and also helps control the jitter in the output signal. These options include SMA, BGA, and LGA output packages, as well as Single-Ended (SE) and Differential (DIFF) output options. The SE option is designed for low-power applications and can provide up to 500mA of output drive current. The DIFF option provides improved noise performance and can provide up to 2000mA of output drive current.

In addition to the VCO and output drive options, the ICS650R-12T devices also provide two power-saving features. The first is an Ultra-Low-Power standby mode that can reduce power consumption by up to 50%. This mode allows the device to enter an ultra-low-power state when the desired frequency is reached, allowing for increased battery life in portable applications. The second is the Dynamic Frequency Switching (DFS) mode. This mode allows the ICS650R-12T to select and enter different frequency synthesis modes as needed, allowing for increased efficiency in power-hungry applications.
