An IGBT works by using the controlled application of a voltage across itself, thus flowing an electric current between its collector and emitter. When voltage is applied to the IGW40N60H3FKSA1, electrons in the n-type layer become attracted to the positive charge side of the p-type layer. This action of electrons passing through the insulating layer is what closes the switch, allowing current to flow between the collector and emitter. Applying a voltage to the gate electrode keeps the current flowing. Removing the voltage to the gate electrode will open the switch preventing current flow between the collector and emitter.
