Working Principle

The IL611A-1E works by transmitting data signals across a specially designed isolation barrier using low-power CMOS logic. Data is isolated through the Burr-Brown Digital Isolation (BBI) Barrier, which is a specifically designed CMOS Transistor array that provides circuit protection from external electrical noise and eliminates the need for AC/DC conversion. The data is then passed through the optical or electrical isolation component of the isolation barrier, which provides a higher degree of isolation than the traditional transformer.

The BBI Barrier utilizes a Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) signal to measure the capacitance within the device. The TDR signal is generated by a high speed internal clock that is multipled by a multiplexer which determines the capacitance value. The actual capacitance value is then compared to a reference value, and if the two are within 50 pF the data is considered reliable. If the capacitor values vary significantly, the isolation barrier will not pass the data.

The data received by the isolation barrier is then transmitted across the isolation barrier by using a unique coding scheme. This coding scheme ensures that the data is accurate as the data is not affected by any of the nearby noise present in the system. The IL611A-1E provides various features to improve the communication accuracy such as an adaptive internal pull up/pull down resistor and an adjustable internal termination resistance.
