IR3103 is a three-phase gate driver IC, which is mainly used in power designs of medium power applications such as industrial motor control and power supply. It is mainly applied in high side and low side gate driving of IGBT or MOSFET, using separate High and Low sides inputs as well as supply voltage, thus eliminating the need of bootstrap capacitors which is common in single-end gate driving designs.Working PrincipleIR3103 is basically an integrated power stage that includes three high side driver stages and three low side driver stages, each of which contains two Darlington transistors. In the IR3103, the high side drivers are enabled by PWM outputs from the microcontroller, while the low side drivers are internally controlled by a charge pump, which is enabled by the reset signal from the microcontroller. The IR3103 utilizes a boot strap voltage from the high side driver to generate positive gate voltages for the low side transistors.The high side stages are sourced from the microcontroller, and when a logic ‘0’ is applied, the corresponding high side driver stage will be disabled. The logic ‘1’ input forms a closed-loop circuit between the microcontroller and the high side driver, enabling current to flow when the logic input is high. The low side drivers are enabled by a sinking signal, and when an enable signal is applied to the reset pin, the corresponding low side driver is activated without any additional sourcing current.IR3103 includes voltage protection circuits to ensure safe operation of the IC. Under over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-temperature conditions, the integrated protection circuit will disable the high side drivers, low side drivers, or it can completely shut off the IC depending on the fault condition.
