The IRKE71/12A diode rectifier is classified as single diode rectifier, and is able to provide high conductivity in applications such as in power supplies. It is a current and reverse voltage hungry device and is capable of creating large energy savings when minimising the on resistance losses.

In order for a current to flow, the IRKE71/12A must be able to create an electric field across its terminals. This field will cause a force to be applied to one of the terminals, resulting in a forward bias and creating a conducting current path. The electric field must be created to the threshold level of the diode rectifier for conduction to take place. The wider the gap between the terminals, the higher the threshold level and the lower the current flow.

In order to control the current flow, the IRKE71/12A uses a resistor. The resistor acts as a bridge between the terminals of the diode rectifier and the load. The resistance of the resistor is determined by the magnitude of the voltage that needs to be rectified.
