IRKH56/10A is a three-phase, zero-cross-over thyristor module, which can be used in a variety of applications involving power conversion. It is made of three thyristors in one package, enabling it to provide a range of electrical protection and control. The module is available in a wide range of sizes and can be used for both AC and DC applications. The IRKH56/10A features integrated, reverse blocking, UV and over-temperature protection and is suitable for a wide range of motor drives, UPSs, adjustable speed drives, and other applications that require a smooth and fast transition of power.

The IRKH56/10A has an integrated gate resistor, making it easier to control the thyristor turn-on and turn-off. The device is also equipped with an integral diode to provide short circuit protection in case of accidental shorted-circuits, thus preventing damage to the module. The operation of the IRKH56/10A is based on the phenomenon of minority carrier injection. When a positive gate voltage is applied to the anode side of the thyristor, a small current is injected into the gate creating an electric field that ionizes gas molecules. This ionization produces an avalanche of electrons and ions that flow from the cathode to the anode. When the current across the junction reaches a certain level, current will flow through the thyristor and the module will be turned on.

To turn it off, a negative gate voltage is applied to the anode side of the thyristor. This voltage decreases the current at the junction, which decreases the electric field and repels the electrons and ions back to the cathode, which then shuts off the current. The device can be turned back on again by reapplying the positive gate voltage.
