The ISL6316CRZ is an advanced, highly integrated, high performance, dual synchronous buck pulse width modulation (PWM) controller suitable for small form factor, high current, low power applications and +/-8V full Rail-to-Rail output voltage range, tolerant to output and input differential voltage. This application note will discuss the applications and working principle of the ISL6316CRZ.

Applications of ISL6316CRZ

The ISL6316CRZ is specifically designed to improve power density, reduce Mark-to-Space ratio and operating temperature by minimizing switching losses in a small form factor, and mainly used in notebook PCs, GPU/CPU applications, low power PMICs, power adapters and similar such devices.

It supports a peak 6A gate drive capability providing high switching frequency of up to 1MHz for small low profile inductor(s). It also provides two operational voltage ranges that can support up to +/- 8V full Rail-to-Rail outputs with input voltages ranging from 2.7V to 5.5V.

Suitable for extremely high current applications, the ISL6316CRZ provides very fast transient response and is thermally protected by an integrated thermal shutdown. This device also features the proprietary Inductor Peak Current Mode control providing excellent output voltage transient during light loads, dynamic loads, fast line/load transients, or overload conditions.

Working Principle

The ISL6316CRZ is a dual synchronous wave modulation (PWM) voltage regulator featuring two outputs, each output has two synchronous MOSFETs controlled by two independent PWM controllers. This device is designed to step down the input voltage to provide two regulated output voltages.

The ISL6316CRZ Controller can operate in either Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) modes to increase efficiency in light load situations. It can also be configured to limit power dissipation by changing the duty ratio in a PFM-only mode.

The device also features a power good output signal that indicates when the output voltage is within a certain range. This signal is generated by a selectable comparator or a divide-by-N block. The ISL6316CRZ PWM controller includes synchronous drivers for the top & bottom MOSFETs, current sensing & regulation, as well as a phase-shift -ring oscillator to ensure a reliable gate-shooting.

The PWM controller regulates the output voltage by sensing the feedback path connected to the outputs. The controller also features frequency control, short circuit protection and cycling control. During operation, the power supply is turned on and the PWM controller begins to ramp up the output voltage in an open loop mode. The loop then closes and the PWM controller will maintain the output voltage of the supply.(VREF).

The output of the controller is regulated by monitoring a feedback voltage to the corresponding outputs. The controller includes synchronous drivers to control the output of the MOSFETs, current sensing & regulation, as well as a phase-shift -ring oscillator to ensure reliable gate-shooting. Additionally, the controller features short circuit protection, frequency control and cycling control.
