The ISL6420IR-T is a wide input range non-synchronous, buck controller from Intersil used for medium power applications such as game consoles, automotive, industrial, and communication systems. The device features a low quiescent current and high current mode control, making it an ideal solution for those power supply designs requiring a wide input range and medium current output. The device is also equipped with field-proven fault protection, including overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, under voltage protection, and over temperature protection.

The ISL6420IR-T is designed to switch between PWM and PFM/PWM modes depending on the load requirements. In PWM mode, the device uses pulse-width modulation to provide a constant current output across different frequencies. This mode has higher transient response through the active response feature and faster line transient response. In order to ensure the safety of the device, the ISL6420IR-T is equipped with an On/Off Soft-Start function which allows the device to start up slowly in order to prevent inrush current when the device is powered on. The device also offers an Open-Circuit protection feature which shuts the IC down in order to protect it from damage if an open circuit is detected. In addition, the device is equipped with a Fan Sense Monitor which can detect any fan failure or imbalance and shut down in order to protect the IC.
