The ISL6559CR is a fixed-frequency, dual-output, input voltage step-down, current-mode (CM) and voltage-mode (VM) synchronous buck controller from Intersil Corporation. It is designed to provide higher performance and enhance flexibility for efficient regulation of modern multi-output applications. It is part of a family of power management controllers supported by the PowerNavigator tool, a web-based configurator and excitation designer that simplifies and accelerates system design and reduces bill-of-materials (BOM) costs.

The ISL6559CR features advanced margin control and power tracking technologies that can be customized to meet the challenging requirements of multi-phase and multi-output voltage rail synchronization applications. It includes a two-level cycle-by-cycle current limit setting mechanism, which eliminates the need for continuous cycle-by-cycle current limit adjustment during startup. During steady-state operation, it allows the designer to optimize the output voltage ripple and inductor size to minimize system costs.

The synchronous buck topology is suitable for a wide range of applications that require efficient, reliable and cost-effective point-of-load conversion. Applications include telecommunications, computing, automotive, industrial and consumer power supplies. Some of the most common application areas for the ISL6559CR include multi-phase and multi-output power supplies for servers, pre-regulators for high-power processor core and memory supplies, and point-of-load regulators for a variety of processor cores and memory supplies.

The ISL6559CR offers both voltage-mode (VM) and current-mode (CM) control modes with an adjustable non-linear compensation network. With a wide loop bandwidth of 1MHz and an integrated error amplifier, the device achieves a fast transient response and excellent system stability. The magnetic reset circuit of the controller quickly recovers from a fault condition when a spin-lock feature is enabled.

The ISL6559CR includes overvoltage protection (OVP) and overcurrent protection (OCP) features. The OVP feature trips if the sensed output voltage reaches a programmed level, providing built-in protection against overvoltage conditions. The OCP feature trips if the current through either of the buck output channels exceeds the programmed limit, preventing excessive current from damaging the system load.

Other features of the ISL6559CR include power good detection, power tracking, and input UVLO protection; monotonic Soft Start to ramp in the output voltage and current during startup, and programmable current limiting. It also includes an external clock input that can be used to frequency synchronize the output. All of these features combine to provide a very efficient, reliable, and cost-effective synchronous buck controller solution.
