Power Factor Correction (PFC) is a term used to describe the power factor control technology employed in electrical equipment. Its purpose is to improve the system\'s power factor in order to reduce the losses that may due to power factor loss. The ISL6730BFUZ offers two basic operation modes, voltage-mode and current-mode control. In voltage-mode operation, the controller regulates the converter\'s output voltage with respect to the input line voltage and thereby maintains the power factor. The current-mode control however is more advanced and provides more efficient control of the converter output parameters. It adjusts the output current to a fixed set point and this maintained value, which is independent of the input line voltage variations, makes current-mode the preferred choice for low cost, low power factor correction applications.

The ISL6730BFUZ also features an internal startup circuit and embedded 3-phase interleaved boost topology support to optimize system design flexibility. It features an adaptive maximum duty cycle limiting circuit which autonomously reduces the switching frequency of the PFC under light loads and also reduces the average power losses in the switch network. The built-in patented frequency spraying technique improves system efficiency at light loads and helps meet global minimum efficiency requests.

Other features of the ISL6730BFUZ include a low voltage lockout ( LVLO) circuit, which disables the power switch when the input voltage drops below the specified threshold, a peak current sense comparator which monitors the input current for over-current protection and a droop circuitry generation for easy current sharing among multiple converters.
