ISL6744AB Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL6744AB is a DC/DC switching transistor controller from Intersil Corporation designed for a wide range of switch-mode power supplies. It supports the various power supply topologies including Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost configurations for both synchronous and nonsynchronous applications. The controller provides a wide input voltage range of 2.9V to 27V, and an adjustable output voltage range of 1.2V to 24V.

Working Principle

The ISL6744AB is based on a peak and average current mode control topology. The controller operates by monitoring the instantaneous sum of the currents flowing through the switch and its associated output inductor. The current sense signal is then compared against a reference signal to determine the duty cycle of the MOSFET switch control signal. This reduces the total amount of power lost by the switch and associated inductor during operation. The controller also has an internal adaptive overshoot compensation circuitry, which provides fast and accurate loop compensation. This helps reduce the dynamic output voltage ripple.

In addition, the ISL6744AB provides an adjustable errors window, which allows for improved line transient response by slowing down the pulse rate. The controller also supports low dropout detection and frequency hiccup mode, allowing designers to reduce noise in a multimode system and extend battery life.
