ISL8240MEVAL3Z Evaluation Boards are designed to demonstrate the performance and capabilities of the ISL8240M PWM controller for DC/DC and AC/DC(Off-Line) SMPS. The evaluation board features a simplified circuit design with minimum component count. This board enables customers to evaluate the ISL8240M in different applications without building a full-scale SMPS design.

ISL8240MEVAL3Z allows a synchronous Buck power-supply circuit architecture with output ranging from 0.6V to 6V @ 3A, and a pre-regulated Flyback with output voltage of 12V @ 0.5A. The evaluation board also includes under-voltage lockout, over-voltage protection (OVP) and short-circuit protection circuits.

The board accepts a wide input voltage range of 8V to 20V to allow customers to create multiple output configurations. With switch on-board, users are able to evaluate the Buck and Flyback applications on the same board. The full board size is 95 mm x 75 mm. It needs an external control board to step the isolation voltage or to input PWM signal.

The ISL8240MEVAL3Z control circuits provide protections and shut down outputs. Specific fault clocking pins on the IC like OVP and SCP will be asserted when an over-voltage condition occurs or when the output is shorted across the ground. When these fault pins are asserted, the PWM controller enters a fault state and shuts down the outputs.

The on-board over-voltage protection (OVP) circuit monitors the output voltage and shuts the outputs down to within +/- 1% of its preset value. The board also features a thermal protection circuit (TPC) which monitors both the junction temperature of the IC and the power MOSFETs on the board. In case of over-temperature, the TPC is activated and the PWM controller shuts down the outputs immediately.
