ISL8105ACRZ Application Field and Working Principle

The ISL8105ACRZ is a 3A, integrated synchronous step-down DC-DC converter with a high efficiency ultra-low quiescent current (100nA) that provides advanced current mode control with excellent stability and line/load regulation. It is suitable for battery-powered systems and applications where high efficiency, low noise and flexibility are wanted.

The ISL8105ACRZ provides features such as a wide input voltage range, adjustable switching frequency up to 1MHz (fixed 1MHz default), and external or internal feedback. It has programmable features such as switching frequency, soft start duration, output voltage and overcurrent protection. It has an operating junction temperature range of -40C to +125C.

Working Principle

The ISL8105ACRZ is a synchronous step-down switching controller with current-mode control for use in battery-powered systems. It integrates a voltage reference, high side MOSFET, PWM comparator and voltage error amplifier. The converter operates in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode with adjustable switching frequency.

The PWM comparator compares the programmed output voltage with the voltage feedback from the external voltage divider to determine the amount of time the MOSFET should be turned on. The voltage error amplifier senses the difference between the programmed output voltage and feedback and adjust the current mode error amplifier. The current mode control loop regulates the output voltage as well as provides excellent line and load regulation.

The controller also integrates soft-start function and output over current protection, both features assist in providing a stable output voltage regulation while minimizing stress to external components.
