This high input to output isolation allows the user to avoid noise and transients due to ground loops or potential surges, which can be beneficial in the transfer of data or sensitive control signals.The ISP817DXSMT/R is a 4-pin Dual-in-Line (DIP) optocoupler package, available in wide range temperature and ESDA versions, rated for a maximum isolation voltage of 3kV rms for 1 minute. The device features a center emitter optocoupler, an output transistor and a Darlington connection, allowing it to switch up to 100mA from a 3.5V power supply.The optocoupler consists of an infrared emitter – typically an infrared LED, and a photo transistor, and is designed to transfer signals across the galvanic isolation barrier. Photo transistors are sensitive to visible and infrared light, and can effectively convert low-energy optical signals into electric ones.When the control signal is applied to the optocoupler (low level signal of a few milliamps, typically 0-20mA) the infrared LED emits light, which reaches the photo transistor, activating it and generating a current flow inside the photo transistor. This current is amplified in the Darlington connection, driving the output transistor, and allowing the output signal to be sent to the desired direction.The ISP817DXSMT/R is designed to switch signals and is very efficient at blocking and passing signals, isolating the input from the output circuit. It also features protection circuits such as a frequency compensation circuit, temperature compensation, phase compensation, diode clamp functions and a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of up to 100KHz.The ISP817DXSMT/R can be used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial applications, such as LED lighting systems, motor control systems, HVAC controls, and telecom equipment, such as routers, set-top boxes, or modems. It can also be used in automotive applications, such as engine control systems, CAN bus interfaces or dashboard instrumentation.
