Optoisolators - Transistor, Photovoltaic Output: ISP827XSM application field and working principleOptoisolators are opto-electronic devices that provide electrical isolation between two electronic circuits, which are usually two separate parts of an overall electronic system. They deliver isolation for both electrical and safety purposes.A popular device of the Optoisolators family is the ISP827XSM. This device is a 4-pin Transistor Output Optoisolator, which combines a high-power photovoltaic array and dual NPN Darlington output transistors. This makes it an ideal choice for isolating signals between higher voltages and different grounds. In terms of application field, the ISP827XSM can be used for high-level switching control applications, such as controlling resistive heaters, fans, motors, pumps, solenoids, and relays, as well as digital logic level signal isolation. The working principle of the ISP827XSM is rather simple. The device is sensitive to small changes in illumination when light strikes its surface, allowing it to either turn on or turn off its NPN Darlington output transistors. The light used to activate the device is provided by an external source, such as an LED.When current flows through the LED, light is emitted and passed through the integrated optical window of the device. This then passes through the photodiode array, which converts the light into electrical current. This current is then amplified to a higher level by the transistor drivers in the device, which switch on the NPN Darlington output transistors. When the LED is turned off, the NPN Darlington transistors are turned off as well. This allows the device to operate in either a On-Off or PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) mode, allowing it to be switched on and off quickly and precisely, with no arcing and few sparks. The ISP827XSM is a great device for many applications, due to its efficiency, compact size, and low cost. Furthermore, its opto-electronics provide superior isolation to ensure a reliable connection between two independent circuits.
