Working Principle
When the gate driver IC is enabled, the enabled gate driver input pin is connected to the gate of a MOSFET or IGBT power switch through an opto-isolator. The input voltage to the opto-isolator turns the MOSFET or IGBT on, allowing current to flow through the power switch. The power switch is also connected to the enable/disable pin of the gate driver IC, as a current sensor. When the current levels exceed the threshold level, the enable/disable pin will quickly turn off the gate driver IC, preventing the MOSFET or IGBT power switch from current overshoot and preventing it from damaging the power switch. The circuit is designed so that when the enable/disable pin is at logic 1, the current sensing circuit is disabled, allowing the gate driver IC to control the gate of the power switch freely. In case of a fault, the enable/disable pin will quickly turn off the gate driver IC, thus preventing damage to the power switch.Applications
