Thyristors are a class of semiconductor components that are used in a variety of applications. Commonly referred to as a three-terminal device, a thyristor includes an anode, a cathode, and a gate terminal.
K1200S, or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs), belong to this family of thyristors. They are commonly used in AC power control applications such as motor speed control, dimming lights, and automatic lighting control. K1200S are easy to use and provide reliable performance over a wide range of loads.
The principle of K1200S is simple. They can only be turned ON when a signal is applied to their gate terminal. Once the gate is activated, the SCR passes through a state of conduction and remains in a conducting state until the current is interrupted, or a reverse bias is applied to the SCR.
Similar to SCRs, DIACs and SIDACs are also thyristors, but with a few differences. DIACs and SIDACs are used to bridge the gap between logic circuits and other input and output devices such as switches and relays. They are also frequently used in pulse-width modulation circuits to ensure accurate timing. Both DIACs and SIDACs have two anodes, providing the convenience of a two-terminal device.
Unlike SCRs, DIACs and SIDACs are both triggered at a set voltage level and cannot be switched on by a gate signal. When the voltage across the two anodes reaches the breakdown voltage, the device will trigger and pass through a period of conduction, but unlike SCRs it will not remain in this state and will return to its non-conducting state once the voltage across the two anodes reduces.
Although SCRs and DIACs have some similarities, they are used in different applications due to their different triggering mechanisms. K1200S are best suited for motor speed control, dimming lights, and other AC power control applications, while DIACs and SIDACs are better suited for pulse-width modulation circuits and other logic circuits.
