A DIAC (“diode alternistor” or “bidirectional ac switch”) is a two-terminal four-layer semiconductor device that acts as a switch in response to an applied voltage. DIACs combine the high-speed switching characteristics of the diode and the low-voltage regulation of the transistor. DIACs are used in high-power applications such as in power supply switching and in thyristor switching circuits.

A SIDAC (“silicon-controlled rectifier”) is a three lead switch essentially a thyrister or SCR with a single gate. Like the thyristor, the SIDAC can block high voltages in one direction. The SIDAC is usually used to control bidirectional switching. SIDACs are more suited for high-frequency a.c. applications such as those used in motor control and switching applications.
